Double X really bothered me. It was obvious that what Ann Friedman wrote about women's writing "mucking up" the main product was the POV behind the creation of Double X.

As I read the articles there, I started wondering what the submission guidelines were. Were you supposed to check the content of your pants before deciding whether to submit at Slate or Double X, or were you supposed to decide based on how "womanly" your topic was? Or were you only supposed to submit "womanly" topics to Double X if you had a vagina, but otherwise you could submit at Slate?

And, most importantly, who ever thought Double X was a good idea?

*mind boggles*

The recent ForbesWoman poll.. does the phrase "you guys" bother women... is an interesting case study. http://www.forbes.com/2009/11/30/professional-behavior-sexism-forbes-woman-leadership-workplace-etiquette.html There are women who really take offense and, it seems, plenty others who don't even notice. I'm of the latter group myself.. and consider it just a formality/informality difference as opposed to a sexist thing.

Great post, Andrea. I have often had thoughts along the lines of what Ann Friedman wrote - and can't wait to read that whole article.
