This Just In: Men Are Inefficient Grocery Shoppers

In my latest HuffingtonPost contribution, I write about the TNS Retail Forward
study showing that male grocery shoppers tend to: pretend the item is out of stock if they can’t find it, call their spouse for help while there, and dislike the self-serve
checkout aisle because they don’t like loyalty cards, among other
things.

Insert eye roll here.

Uh…this is not necessarily a gender issue, but more likely an
issue for people who don’t do the grocery shopping as frequently. And,
the inefficient behavior of the men studied is probably shared by a lot
of women who: get just as frustrated when they can’t find items, call
their spouses to complain that they are even there at all, and are
equally annoyed that they have to use loyalty cards.

Are consumer researchers running out of things to do? Are study
findings made more exciting if a gender-specificity can be claimed? I
can see it now: "Women Don’t Like Mean People," or "Men Dislike
Vacuuming."

Andrea; I regularly read your posts and find them SO interesting, but have to tell you that you’ve got this one completely wrong. Being married to a man, it has been proven to me over and over that he is grocery-challenged. The “get in and get out” shopping methods of most males apply to the grocery store as well. I’m certain that it could be proven that unless a requested grocery item has a 3 foot neon arrow flashing and pointing to it, it cannot be found by your average male. This “male-blindness” goes beyond the grocery store, and applies to any area of the house (especially refrigerator). I am convinced that men love simplicity. Grocery stores are overwhelmingly stocked with endless choices of brands, sizes, etc….an environment that men hate to be faced with.

Sharon – I appreciate your showing me the other side. Maybe my years of living without a man in the house are showing? Do you think your husband would learn to shop more efficiently if he put his mind to it? Is it a lost cause? Thanks much for your honesty!
