Stay Humble, It’s the Best Choice

UMICHlogoA University of Michigan Business School (please note: I have my BA from UM and will say “Go Blue” at every opportunity), Duke University and University of Chicago group research effort recently found that most people believe they “can accurately gauge how our personal performance and abilities stack up against our peers,” when, in fact, we are “poor judges of our own comparative talents.”

Umm, hmmm. Interestingly, both top achievers and poor performers show similar degrees of inaccuracy and bias in making such interpersonal comparisons. Also – the more unskilled you were, the more closely your estimate of how you did matched reality, while the more skilled you were, the more likely you were to think you did poorly when in reality you did less poorly. Confused yet?

Bottom line: Estimating your performance is difficult regardless of skill. So, stay humble and strive to learn more and more. Maybe you will one day achieve the point of being more highly skilled than you could ever imagine or realize.

What a fun day that will be.
